Well-Read

How often do we describe someone as being “well-read?” What do we really mean when we say that? That they love to read? That they are well informed because they read a varied collection of material? However we use the term, it is always a compliment and if someone is “well-read” everyone considers it an accomplishment. Well, now I am setting out to tackle this particular mountain myself.

I have long considered myself a bookworm. Books have been my refuge, my comfort, and my door to adventure and new worlds. Throughout my years in world of the written word I have explored the works of many famous authors. It is thanks to my various teachers, throughout my education, that I have been introduced to so many of the classics. However, now that I am longer in school I have found a consistent pattern in the type of material that I choose to read. Granted, I still love to read but I am usually drawn to that same genre. Now, though, it is time for a change.

In a recent conversation with my mom, the term “well-read” was used in reference to my brother to describe his own writing style. Now, my brother and I generally choose to read different material and I generally list that in the “pro” column because it allows our conversation to be varied and diverse. On the other hand, I have to say that I am also a bit jealous of the reference. So, my response? To set out on a quest of my own!

I have decided to begin an exploration into the land of the written word and venture into areas and annals that I have previously left untouched. Some might question my sanity or demand to know why I am setting out to conqueror this particular mountain now. There are two main reasons. The first, as I have already discussed, is to increase and vary my own horizons. I have to admit that I would love to be able to describe myself as being “well-read” and more importantly I would like to become a better informed citizen of the world.

The second reason? Since I have been a bookworm for most of my life, I also love to write. Someday I would love to be an author and share my stories and thoughts with the world. So, who better to learn from than those who have gone before and been not only successful but have been acknowledged by society as being the best? My goal is to read and study the works of some of the most famous writers in the world. What has made them so popular throughout the years? What are the key elements of their stories and their writing style?

So I am setting out on my new quest and I invite you to join me. If you have suggestions for what I should read, please leave them for me and I will make sure to include them along the way. I will be using this blog to log and chronicle my journey through the classics. I will use this page to write about what I have read, what I think makes it great or horrible and why these authors have remained popular and relevant throughout the years. I invite you to follow my progress, to participate with suggestions and thoughts of your own, and in general have a good time. Hope to see you again soon and in the meantime, happy reading!!
